Dr. G. Subramanian
Founder and Director

Dr. G. Subramanian the founder and Director of National Facility for Marine Cyanobacteria and first Co-ordinator of Bioinformatics Centre- Sub-Distributed Centre, had his Masters Degree in Botany from St. Josephs College, Tiruchirappalli. He Joined the University Service in the year 1985, Before joining the University he had worked in Coffee Research Institute Karnataka, Thiyagarajar College Madurai, Madurai College, Madurai. He had generated funds to the turn of 5 Crores through Department Of Ocean Development, Department of Biotechnology and Indian Council for Medical Research Schemes.
Genesis of NFMC

Scientific exploration of Marine cyanobacteria was envisioned in Bharathidasan university, Tiruchirappalli in the form of Microbial Technology Unit in the Department of Botany in the year 1985 by Dr. G. Subramanian. On realizing the marine Cyanobacterial wealth and potentials elsewhere in the world, Department of Ocean Development (DOD) Govt. of India sanctioned a project to Dr. G. Subramanian to the tune of Rs. 15. 00 Lakhs to enumerate the marine Cyanobacterial wealth of the Tamil Nadu Coasts. The promising results for their kindled the interest, and paved way for the establishment of National Facility for Marine Cyanobacteria, a DBT, Govt. of India sponsored Facility in Bharathidasan University, which is the 'brain child' of Dr. G. Subramanian. Basic and applied work is being carried out, and with this good infrastructural facility. National Facility for Marine Cyanobacteria since 1996, till 2006 in collaboration with Department of Microbiology was offering M.Sc Microbiology Course. In 2006, NFMC started its 2 year M.Sc Marine Biotechnology programme and 2007, Department of Marine Biotechnology was established. In the year 2008, the Departmental started offering M.Phil and Ph.D Microbial Biotechnology. In the year 1999, because of the advent of Bioinformatics, Dr. G. Subramanian has been sanctioned a DBT, Govt. of India project on Sub-DIC (Sub Distributed Centre) specialty to carry out cyanobacterial Bioinformatics the Primordial Organism of the earth.
