Welcome to National Facility for Marine Cyanobacteria

National Facility for Marine Cyanobacteria

History of NFMC

NFMC (National Facility for Marine Cyanobacteria) is an Infrastructural Research facility established by the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India as one of nearly a dozen such Facilities in different parts of India. This Facility is relatively recent as it started only in the year 1991 at Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli, India. The University itself is young and yet within a little over a decade of its existence, has made rapid strides in different aspects of higher education and research. The pioneering work on the unique photoautotrophic, prokaryotic, mostly nitrogen fixing group of marine microbes namely cyanobacteria at this University, paved the way for the establishment of this Facility.

Vision & Mission

To survey the entire coast line of India and establish a germplasm collection of marine cyanobacteria;

To carry out basic and applied research resulting in both the understanding of basic biology as well as exploitation of these organisms by way of technologies towards human welfare;
